Heavy Rain in Upper Midwest to Cause Flooding Along Missouri River

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (W1N) — Heavy rainfall in parts of the Upper Midwest since Thursday will cause water levels to rise downstream in the coming days.

Flood warnings are in place across South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. Between Thursday and Saturday, nearly 7 inches of rain fell in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The National Weather Service reports areas to the south received 10 to 15 inches of rain over the same period.

Most of the heaviest rainfall occurred downstream of the Gavins Point Dam, the southernmost dam on the Missouri River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has reduced the water release at the dam.

Flood warnings are posted along the Missouri River, extending downstream to St. Joseph, Missouri. In St. Joseph, the Missouri River is expected to crest at a moderate flood stage on Sunday, June 30. This could lead to flooding in a residential area in northwest St. Joseph and along the Riverwalk trail.

Minor flooding is forecasted for Atchison, Leavenworth, and Parkville.
