PLATTSBURG, Mo. (W1N) — Dozens gathered over the weekend in Plattsburg to dedicate a mural honoring the historic Jefferson Highway.
The Jefferson Highway, one of North America’s first highway systems, passed through Plattsburg as part of its route from New Orleans to Winnipeg, Canada.
The mural overlooks a section of Main Street that was part of the highway in the 1910s and 1920s. The building it adorns once housed a Ford dealership and is featured in the artwork.
The building was constructed by C.R. Young, a board member of the Jefferson Highway, and opened around the same time the highway was established.
Local artist Daniel Bartle designed and painted the mural, which took four months to complete.
The mural is located at the corner of Main and Maple streets in downtown Plattsburg.
